The official launch of the ‘Lao Trade Portal’ website marks a major milestone in a World Bank financed project led by PM Group involving a trade development facilitation programme.
The Lao Trade Portal (www.laotradeportal.gov.la) provides Laos importers and exporters with a single point of reference for all information relating to import and export into and from Laos. Part of a programme to simplify and harmonize trade facilitation procedures, the site integrates all trade-related information, including that available on individual ministries and agency websites, into an easily accessible and user friendly resource. The launch of the Trade Portal is a key deliverable in fulfilling Laos’ requirements for World Trade Organisation (WTO) membership. The World Bank financed programme was carried out on behalf of the Department of Import and Export (DIMEX) at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
"The creation of the Lao PDR Trade Portal is a key milestone in improving our country’s business environment. The Seventh National Social and Economic Development Plan (2011-2015) identifies trade information services as one of its priority areas" said Dr. Nam Viyaketh, Minister of Industry and Commerce.
Trevor O’Regan, IFI Projects Manager at PM Group added, “This is the first step towards a National Single Window for Laos. It is also an important step towards WTO membership and PM Group is proud to play its part in assisting the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to achieve that important objective for the country and for its people.”
The launch event was held in Vientiane, the Capital of Laos. The city will host the 9th EU ASEM summit next November, with over 50 heads of state and governments from Europe and Asia coming together to discuss their future priorities and plans.
PM Group has been providing consultancy services on EU-funded technical assistance projects for more than 15 years and more recently the company has begun work on similar projects in Asia for the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB).
