Building Services Engineers central to low energy, low carbon and energy efficient buildings

Building services engineers are central to the effective delivery of low energy, low carbon and energy efficient, sustainable buildings – new builds or refurbishments.

“It is essential, therefore, that building services engineers are appointed and integrated into project teams from the outset to maximise the benefits of early engineering input to the design process", says Derek Mowlds, recently elected Chairman of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Ireland and Senior Project Manager, PM Group.

During his inaugural address as Chairman at the CIBSE AGM recently, Derek also emphasised CIBSE’s continuing commitment to monitor and input to further developments in regulations and policy relating to carbon reduction, energy, engineering and the built environment.

“It is vital we keep our members up to date with the very latest information, so that we can continue to advise our clients and colleagues on the latest issues.  We will achieve this by maintaining our strong links with the Department of the Environment; the SEAI; the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the OPW”, he said.

CIBSE Ireland will deliver a comprehensive programme of activities in 2011-2012, including Continuing Professional Development events at DIT Kevin Street, DIT Bolton Street and the Regions (Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Cork) and collaborative events with other professional institutions to focus on promoting integration in design.  The annual CIBSE conference will take place in the new surroundings of Croke Park and there will be a number of awards, including the Irish Lighter DIT Student Awards, and the Sustainable Design and Research Awards, whose past recipients include Chris Croly and in 2011, PM Group.

Derek invited members of CIBSE to provide suggestions and commentary on any other particular areas of focus.  “I am committed to working with the committee in serving the Institution and its members to the very best of my ability over the coming year and look forward to meeting them all again at one of our many events during the year."
