Janssen (formerly Centocor) Biologics established a new cell culture and purification site in Cork, Ireland. The facility has a 180kg-per-year biologic API capacity.
Amongst many other sustainable features, the facility utilizes a biomass (woodchip) boiler for base steam load. When benchmarked against existing biotech facilities the facility was found to be 40% more energy-efficient and there was a 90% reduction in the carbon footprint versus fossil fuel.
