Luke Madden, is the BIM Department Manager for PM Group's Dublin Business Unit. Luke is part of the Digital Team and leads BIM delivery for all projects out of the Dublin office.

What do you do?

As the BIM Manager for the Dublin Business unit, I work with a fantastic a team of digital experts including model managers, clash managers, BIM technicians and administrators. Digital project delivery is an ever evolving process in PM Group and each project is different. That said, we’re on the path to creating a uniform experience for digital delivery across all projects.

What inspired you to become a BIM Manager?

I’ve always loved innovation and have a strong focus on the removal of waste in processes. The combination of the right software, right mindset and a planned approach allows this to become a reality. I’ve always been a techy guy too, which helps a lot!

What are you currently working on?

I’m in the midst of helping to develop a digital-BIM strategy for two new blue chip clients while of course managing the department. I am also implementing internal improvements as part of our digital project delivery services in Dublin.

Why is BIM so important?

For me, the BIM process is the foundation for project delivery excellence. It allows our design teams to use data, geometry and interconnected activities to produce a more cohesive design in a leaner manner. This is helping us to support our clients to ensure they meet challenging deadlines.

How do you see this space developing in the future?

Digital and BIM are constantly evolving. We’re already using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) on projects to provide training and verification during our projects. The real ‘oil’ of projects however, is the data. We’re developing new innovations that will help future proof our place in the market and keep us at the fore of the industry.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

Now that’s a wide open question! In the BIM world I’ve always loved Navisworks. As a coordinator at heart, it helps to bring people, designs and aspirations together to produce a cohesive project. Outside the digital project delivery world, I own a Playstation VR helmet and love my senses being fooled by technology!!
