Sustainable Energy Award for Biopharma Facilities Design

‘Design and Construction’ Category Win in SEAI Awards

PM Group’s Environment and Sustainability team has won the ‘Design and Construction’ Category in SEAI’s Energy Awards 2026.  The award was based on the design of three new facilities at AstraZeneca’s existing Biopharma campus in Dublin.

SEAI’s annual awards showcase excellence and innovation in sustainable energy. The new ‘Design and Construction’ category recognises designers and contractors who go beyond the bounds of best practice to deliver significant carbon reduction in buildings.

“Congratulations to the project team and to our client AstraZeneca on this award,” said Barry McDermott, Director of Environment and Sustainability Services, PM Group. “It recognises the expertise, innovative design and strong collaboration on the project. The team has demonstrated what can be achieved in a complex industrial setting. AstraZeneca’s facilities set a replicable benchmark for deep decarbonisation of high-energy manufacturing facilities in Ireland and beyond”.

Congratulations also to all the Category Winners and Finalists.

AstraZeneca’s project represents exceptional scale, technical rigour, and demonstrable impact. Sustainability was embedded from concept to commissioning in the project. Through a structured IS399 and SEAI EXEED-led design process, the team delivered 11 GWh of verified energy savings, supported by advanced building performance modelling and facility benchmarking.

Over 50 measures were implemented, combining high-efficiency systems and renewable energy integration. The facilities innovative solutions include heat recovery-enabled heat pumps, optimised air handling unit design and solar PV, and demonstrate a clear “efficiency-first” decarbonisation strategy.

With digital delivery (including BIM and carbon tracking) the facilities were designed in alignment with LEED Gold and EXEED certification.
