Reporting to the Process Group Manager, this role will require the ability to inspire confidence from client briefings through to proposal preparation and design execution.

As well as the technical ability, you will also be responsible for all the day-to-day duties associated with a Head of Department, both office and site based personnel, clients, suppliers and with colleagues throughout the PM Group.

Job Role & Responsibilities (include but not limited to)

  • Support the Process Group Manager to develop and deliver the Automation & Instrumentation elements of the overall Group Development Plan.
  • Develop the Automation & Instrumentation team ensuring on-going personal development needs are identified, including the correct mix of staff and contract resources in the department. Manage, develop and mentor resources in the department including supporting the NEXT Graduate Programme.
  • Take technical responsibility for the team, target flawless delivery to working within man-hour budgets set by projects. Ensure the highest quality of Automation & Instrumentation design, engineering and advice on all projects.
  • Manage the team within the defined utilisation targets.
  • Ensure the Automation & Instrumentation team stays aligned with best practices in industry.
  • Develop and manage the compilation of the Automation & Instrumentation deliverable list to suit individual project requirements and manage the progress and quality of those deliverables.
  • Actively input into PM Group Technology initiatives and drive the Group strategy in terms of BIM or other applications within your department.
  • Ensure compliance with PM Group and/or customer procedures, organise appropriate reviews (including peer reviews) and approve project documents for issue.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure the correct quality of deliverable is achieved in the correct timeframe based on the project schedule.
  • Ensure that all projects comply with applicable local, international and client codes and standards.
  • Assist with developing project schedules and coordinate between all disciplines to ensure the design is in accordance with the agreed project schedule, track/report progress and implement man-hour controls.
  • As required, witness commissioning activities, trials and factory acceptance tests for compliance with design intent and good engineering practice.
  • Support the Process Group Manager to provide support to proposals as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A Bachelor Degree in Instrumentation & Control Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional membership of the IET or Institute of Measurement and Control (to Chartered level) highly desirable (minimum requirement is the ability and willingness to join the IET or IMC with a view to reaching Chartered Engineer).
  • Demonstrable capability and background in Automation & Instrumentation engineering and design projects, gained within a similar multi-disciplined environment which includes;
  • Control & automation philosophies
    • System architecture design
    • Application of ISA95 / S88 methodology
    • CSV strategies including the application of appropriate regulatory standards
    • User / Functional Capture and Specifications
    • PLCs / PACs, SCADA, DCS
    • Batch and continuous process control systems
    • Industrial Networks
    • Instrument Systems
    • Database and Data Storage (Historian & Informatics) systems
    • MES Systems
  • Direct project and engineering experience gained within more or one of our core sectors is highly desirable; Pharmaceuticals, Food, Mission Critical. Although experience in healthcare (such as operating theatres) or labs (including BSL labs) or healthcare/pharma research centres will be considered.
  • Experience in managing teams of engineers is strongly preferred; including resource allocation, personal development of engineers and man-hour control.
  • Display a professional approach and demeanour with a strong ethical approach to safety, quality, environmental protection and business.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively with clients and peers at all levels.
